Lead an Inspired Life: A framework by JIM ROHN

.

Some people were perplexed because they are chronically perplexed people.

Some mocked and laughed. Why? Because they are mockers and laughers.

Some didn’t know what was going on. Those are the people who usually don’t know whats going on.

Some choose to believe, because they are believers.

So leave the perplexers, mockers, laughers, Go with the believers!

Discipline:

How do you get a miracle going? Its all a matter of discipline. And it begins with 1 single step:

Do what you can !
Do the best what you can!

First see your ideal Future. Once you have seen and felt your ideal future, you will be ready to pay any price to get there. What will it take? What must I do and what must I become to get all I want from life? Make a list – what am not doing that would be easy to do, that can greatly change my health, my wealth?

  • 1st key: Awareness.
  • 2nd key: Willingness (Eagerness to maintain your new discipline deliberately, wisely and consistently).
  • 3rd key: Commitment to master the circumstances of your daily life.

.

How tall will a tree grow? As tall as it can.

.

Lets define Discipline: Those unique steps of intelligent thought and activity:

That put a lid on temper & a faucet on courtesy;

That develops the positive & controls the negative;

That encourages success & deters failure;

That shapes lifestyle & controls frustration;

That enhances health & curb sickness;

That promotes happiness & manage sadness.

.

It doesn’t really matter that you attend every seminar that comes to train if you donot apply what you have learned. But first master the art of consistent self-discipline. Without it we’ll be consistently frustrated. Our time will be eaten up by others whose demands are stronger than our own.

It takes discipline to plan. It takes discipline to execute our plan.

It takes discipline to look with full objectivity at the results of our applied plan.

It takes discipline to change either our plan or our method of executing that plan if the results are poor.

It takes discipline to be firm when the world throws opinions at our feet.

And it takes discipline to ponder the value of someone else opinion when our pride and our arrogance leads us to believe that we are the only ones with the answers.

Key to Discipline Start with the little things and work up to the big ones.

Everything affects everything else.

Note of action—Don’t rest too much.

Think of more ways and means to use your own wisdom, your own philosophy, Use your own attitude your own faith, your own courage, your own commitment, your own desires, your own excitement.

Invest Yourslef in disciplines so your talents are not wasted. If You sow well, you will reap well.  For every disciplined effort, there are multiple rewards. If you are fair and honest and patient with others, your rewards will be multiplied. If you give more than you receive, your reward is more than you expect.

Everything of value requires:

  • Care
  • Attention
  • Discipline

Learn the discipline of writing a card, of paying your own bills on time, Arriving on appointments on time, Using your time more effectively, Discipline of paying attention, Paying your taxes, Discipline of paying yourself., Learn the discipline of learning all you can learn, of teaching all you can teach, of reading all you can read.

For

  • Each Book = New Knowledge.
  • Each Success = New Ambition.
  • Each Challenge= New Understanding.
  • Each Failure= New Determinism.

Everything has its price

You cannot clean up your company until you learn to clean up your garage. You cannot be impatient with your children and be patient with your employees. You cannot inspire others to sell more when the goal is inconsistent with your own conduct. Once you see the promise, you are willing to pay the price.

.

Time to act: when the idea is hot & the emotion is strong

.

You gotta hang out with people whom you give problem and they say: “NO-PROBLEM”. How much are they gonna study? As much as they need it. How much are they gonna think? As much as they need to. To make a problem, No-Problem. You need to have this philosophy:

Do whatever you can , and Do the best what you can!
Do it with all your mind
Do it with all your might.
Do it with all your heart.

.

Principle

“Mr. Rohn, all you have at the moment, you have attracted by the person you are.” Mr. shaoff continued: Mr. Rohn, you have got pennies in your pocket. You have got nothing in the bank. The creditors are calling, and you are behind on your promise. Here’s how that occurred. Misfortune has taken place because of the kind of person you are.

I said: “Well how can I change all that? He answered: “ If you will change yourslef, everything else will change for you. You don’t have to change whats outside, all you have got to change is whats inside. To have more, you simply have to become more.”

And then he said: “Don’t wish it were easier, wish that you were better. Don’t wish for fewer problems , wish for more skills, start making the personal changes, and it will all change for you.:

Here’s the challenge: You have got to be able to defend your opinions, if You cannot defend your virtues and if you can’t defend your values, you will fall prey to philosophies that are not in your best interest.

3 Success rules by Ben Franklin:

  1. Happiness doesn’t come from big pieces of great success but small, daily achievements. We must be happy with what we have got when we are in pursuit of what we really want.
  2. Life is not rigid. Within each of us lies the power to mold ourselves and our environments. Begin with a final product in mind.
  3. Success is a pleasure. If what you are doing today isnt satisfying or gratifying, guess what? You are not really successful.

What have you done today that makes this day successful?  Every day u write this down and you’ll see a pattern forming. When you see the pattern of pleasure, you’ll know you’re on the road to success.

.

We donot get paid for the number of hours we work, we get paid for value.

The economic philosophy: work harder on yourself than you do on your job.

What messes up the mind the most: Doing less than you can.

.

Its how you feel about yourself that’s the greatest value.

Discover all you can do.

See how much can you earn.

How much you can share.

How much you can start.

How much you can finish.

How far you can reach.

How far can you extend your influence!

.

Reality is always the best beginning. Within reality lies the possibility to create your own personal miracle. And the power of faith starts with reality. If you can bring yourself to state the truth about a situation, then as the saying goes, the truth will set you free.

Faith isnt faith, unless its all you’re holding onto.

Maintaining the physical

Treat your body like a temple. Your body needs to be a good support system for the mind and spirit. It must provide with strength, energy, power and vitality to take you wherever you want to go.

Major part of success= vitality

Some people don’t do well, simply because they don’t feel well.

3o min a day for strong body. Take stairs instead of escalators. Sports- tennis/ basketball. Swimming.

high physical activity = less sleep need = high mind works
.

Setting compelling goals

Go where the expectations are so strong that they provoke you, push you, urgently insist that you not remain in one place. That way you will grow and change.

Know where r u going.

Identify long term goals:

  1. What do I want to do?
  2. What do I want to be?
  3. What do I want to see?
  4. What do I want to have?
  5. Where do I want to go?

Record list. Write number of years it will take you to achieve it. Now make selection whats really important. Choose 4 goals from each of the 4 frames ( 1year/ 3 year/ 5 year/ 10 years). Write a detailed description of exactly what you see as if u have realized this very moment. Write with absolute clarity.

Then state why do you want to achieve your goals?

Keep track of your progress once you have 16 clearly envisioned strongly motivated long-term goals.

Mr. Shaoff said: “ Set a goal of becoming a millionaire for what it will make of you to achieve it. Set a goal that will make you reach for the stars.”

What a great reason for setting goals: the greatest value in life is not what you obtain, the greatest value in life is what you become.

Major Question to ask is not what am I getting here? A much more powerful question is “ what am I becoming here?”

Rules of setting goals:

  1. Don’t set your goals too low. Don’t join an easy crowd, you wont grow.-Live at the summit.
  2. Don’t compromise, don’t sell out. Count the cost. Don’t compromise your values, virtues and philosophy.

Self preparation

  1. Carefully consider where the next opportunity for reaching your goal will originate. Where will it come from?
  2. Make sure you know what you need to do to be prepared for your opportunity. Take your sure things first.
  3. What you can do to make each opportunity more likely to happen.  What you can do to expediate the process?

Track your progress

You gotta be brutally honest with yourslef.

.

Life’s game plan

Visual chain thinking

When you see that 1 things affects everything else, when you come to realize every discipline affects every discipline, when you look at your future as a chain that needs strong links all along the way, then you’ll build a reservoir of strength and courage that will serve you well during down times. Then you won’t grow discouraged, fearful or impatient with today.

1st Rule of life’s game plan: Don’t begin the activities of the day until you know exactly what you plan to accomplish. Plan tour day!

Don’t begin your week unless you have planned it.

Don’t begin your month unless you have planned it.

2 Things before you make your game plan

  1. Visual chain of your future is like a spread sheet. Instead of listing numbers you list activities. Like a to-do-list
  2. Can be acted for a day/ a single project/ variety of projects happening simultaneously.
  3. Graph paper- make vertical columns (number of days this plan to cover) left hand side- activities-piece-by-piece, deadline-by-deadline.

Keep it in sight- you can see your future right before your eyes. And its powerful!

Reasons to persevere:

  • Who are you working for besides yourself?
  • Who is depending on you?
  • Who will benefit if you persevere and succeed?
  • Who will suffer if you give up and stop trying?
  • Who can you reach out to and help once you have achieved your goals?

A man alone hasn’t got a chance. You must find outside of yourself to persevere if you want to keep going when the going gets tough.

.

The power of ideas

Most people just try to get through the day, I want you to learn how to get from the day!

Source of chance = ideas + inspiration.

The ideas are within: listening range & reading range. Pursue knowledge with high expectation. Spend money time and effort.

IF YOU SEEK YOU WILL FIND.

The consistent, disciplined, purposeful constant search for knowledge: its where the life changing ideas are.

2 Best sources of Information:

  1. Own experience– become a good student of your own life.  Make your own life one of the most important studies. Positives & Negatives. Failures & Success. Everyone has bought someone’s plan. Whose plan have u bought?
  2. Other people experience– Stories, Warnings, knowing what to do and what not to do. Listen to programs and read the books by and about people who have accomplished great things. READ READ RAED. All leaders are readers. You have got to be a good reader and a good listener 30 minutes day. Man cannot live on bread only.

Build your own library: library needs to show you are a serious real student of Life:

  • Life
  • Health
  • Spirituality
  • Sophistication
  • Economics
  • Prosperity
  • Productivity
  • Management
  • Values
  • History
  • Philosophy
  • Novels biographies & autobiographies
  • Law- know what to sign and what not to.

Learn to absorb

Don’t miss anything. Don’t miss the words.

Don’t miss the atmosphere.

Don’t miss the color.

Don’t miss the scenario.

Don’t miss whats going on.

Attend the university of life. Wherever you are, be there. Let your soul and heart take pictures.

Casualness leads to casualties.

Learn to respond

Responding means letting life touch you. Don’t let it kill you, but let it touch you. Let sad things make you sad. Let happy things make you happy. Let the feelings strike you.

Keep a journal

When you listen something interesting- write it down. Be a buyer of blank books – Treasures to leave behind:

  • Pictures,
  • Library,
  • Your journals.

Reflection

To go back. Go back over your notes. Go back over your thoughts. Go back over your day.

Good times to reflect:

  • End of the day
  • End of the month
  • End of the year.

Solitude is a powerful force. We all need to find some occasions to shut out the rest of the world for a while. There are some things that need to be done: ponder, think, wonder, read, study. Absorb.

  • Gather up today and invest it in tomorrow.
  • Gather up this week and invest it in next week.
  • Gather up this year and invest it in the next.

Generating creative ideas

Brain storming- let your mind wander. You cant be worried about saying something stupid or silly. Consider ideas without considering their practicality.

Another technique is doodling. Wakes up different parts of the Brain.

When you are resting to renew your reserves, its much different than resting to avoid your day. When you are psyched up and  excited about life, when you are excited about what you have planned to accomplish for the day, its amazing how you’ll wake up before the alarm clock tries to strike you awake.

Analyze your progress

Write all your days activities.

4 factors of motivation

  1. Recognition from peers
  2. Recognition from respected experts or authorities
  3. Family
  4. Impulse towards benevolence- sharing your wealth wisdom with the world.

Work & family balanced

These are the 2 things humans get most satisfaction from:

  • Work- our contribution to society- our areas of influence and power
  • Love- spouse/ kids/ parents/ friends- knowing that some people are there who care about us, want to spend time with us.

Keep your investment (love, nurturing, kindness, sincerity, care) and family active.

Work hard. Play hard- life has to be balanced.

Living your life in style:

  1. Family- protect relationships with vengeance. If a chair gets in the way, I suggest destroying the chair.
  2. Friendship: who stays by your side when everyone’s leaving. Someone who could come and get you. How much he would spend to get me? As much as it would take. Make sure your friendships get the attention and the effort they deserve.

A good life is not measured by material wealth or possessions. The good life is an attitude, an act, an idea, a discovery, a search.

Become a person of culture. Become a person of unusual substance who brings an added measure of genius to life so our children will be the beneficiaries.

It is not the amount that counts, it’s the style that counts.

Eg: Mr. shaoff said, imagine that you are getting your shoes shined, and the shoeshine boy has done a fabulous job. You have one of the worlds all-time good shines, so you pay him for the shine. Now you consider from the change in your hand what kind of tip to give him and the question pops into your mind, shall I give him 1 quarter or 2 quarters for my shoe shine? If two different amounts of tips ever come to your mind, always go for the higher amount. Become a 2-quarter person.

I said: what difference would that make 1 or 2 quarters? He said: all the difference in the world. If you say, well I’ll just give you 1 quarter that will affect you for the rest of your day. You will start feeling bad. Sure enough, in the middle of the day, you will look down at your great show shine and say I have got to be cheap. One lousy quarter, that will affect you profoundly.

However  if you got for 2 quarters, you wont believe the feeling you can buy for anther quarter. That’s motivation- becoming  2-quarter person and learning to get joy from the greater person you are being.

.

The universal quest

.

Happiness is not in the getting, Happiness is in the becoming.

Happiness is a universal quest.

Happiness is receiving and sharing and repairing and bestowing.

Happiness is found in taking the time to enjoy what you’ve accomplished. Enjoy the plateau,

Happiness is here and now.

Happiness isnt the end result, Happiness is part of the journey.

The road to heaven, is heaven!

.

Leadership

Part of the task of leadership is learning to spend 80% of your time with the 20% of the people who are doing 80% of the work.

If you want to attract quality people, key is to become a person of quality yourself.

  1. Learn to be strong but not impolite.
  2. Learn to be kind but not weak. We must be kind enough to tell somebody the truth, kind enough to lay it on the line, kind enough to tell it like it is and nor deal in delusion.
  3. Learn to be bold but not a bully. It takes boldness to win the day. To build your influence, you have got to walk infront of your group. You have got to be willing to take the first arrow, tackle the first problem, discover the first sign of trouble, you’ve got to seize the moment.
  4. Learn to be humble but not timid. Humility is a virtue, timidity is a disease. Humility is a sense of awe, wonder.
  5. Learn to be proud but not arrogant. It takes pride to build your ambition. Worst kind of arrogance is the arrogance from ignorance.
  6. Learn to develop humor withpout folly. Its okay to be witty but not silly. Fun but not foolish.
  7. Deal in realities. Deal in truth. Just keep life as it is.

Building a successful team

  1. Check each candidates history. Seek out available information regarding the individuals qualifications to do the job.
  2. Check the persons interest level. Arrange face-to-face conversation and try to gauge his/her sincerity to the best of your ability.
  3. Check the prospects responses. Aresponse tells a lot about persons integrity, character and skills. Our attitude reflect our inner selves, so even if we fool others for a while, eventually our true selves will emerge.
  4. Check results- monitor productivity. Sacle 1-10. E upfront with yoyur team as to what you expect the to produce.

Follow 80/20 rule

Diplomacy and strategy are 2 keywords for the effective leader to understand.

Spend 80% of your time with the 20% of the people who are doing 80% of the work.

Story about a sower- (leadership qualities)

  1. He was wise.
  2. He was very ambitious.
  3. He was a hard worker.
  4. He had the best of seeds (its exciting when you feel that you are involved with the best, best product, best idea, best service)

Sower learns the law of average.

First part of the seed he sows, falls by the side and birds get it. It is inevitable. We must all be prepared for the inevitable. There are many influences that pull people away from a good idea. That’s always going to be the case. If you go chasing the birds to straighten things out, you have now left the field. It is so important to know what is a good use of your time and what is a waste of time. Wise sower does: he ignores the birds and keeps on sowing. Why? Cuz he understands the law of average.

The seed falls on the rocky ground where the soil is shallow. Even if seed takes root and a plant starts to grow, the soil is so shallow that on the 1st hot day, the plant will wither and die. Its disappointing but it’s a fact of life. Inevitably some of your team members will quit on the 1st hot day. Learn as a leader- limit your disappointments. Here’s what the wise sower does: he keeps on sowing- How Brilliant!

This time seed falls on thorny ground. The little plant starts to grow but the thorns choke it to death. Once again this is inevitable. These thorns in our lives are excuses some people use for not pushing on and getting the job done. Some people are going to try so little, the are gong to let other things limit their opportunities. The key is to take inevitable and study the obvious. If you donot let it disturb you, you can learn to manage the obvious and get on with the more important things of life.

Sower keeps on sowing and finally the seed falls on good ground. A promise as a leader: it always will!

Even  the good ground has a range of productivity. Part of good ground will yield 30% of what some other will yield 60%, another a 100 %- This is the law of averages.

As a leader  you can find some 100 percenters? Of course! But first you have to go through the birds, hot weather, thorns. You have got to find some ways to use 30 percenters, 60 percenters- that’s how you become a skillful leader. When you learn to deal with all this, you’ll have some 100 percenters to work with.

Developing a craft

  1. Study possibility: the what-if game. what if we had people with special talents. what if we had…..

Strength comes from flexibility. Its smart to be able to see more than 1 alternative to accomplish a task, to see more than 1 solution to slve a problem.

  • Study of opportunity
  • Study of ability (own ability + ppl in charge) leaders must be able to perceive ability. You have got to find a way to uncover all the talent that may lay dormant right under your nose.
  • Area of inevitability- ask yourself in all honesty, if I keep my current daily practices, where will they lead me in 10 years? As a leader you have to help people by telling them about the danger of the falls long before they get within 200 feet of them in a little boat with no motor or oars.
  • Study of rationality-allows you to come to the right conclusion based on the info at hand. You take advice but not orders.

.

Financial independence

What you do with what you have is more important than what you have.

Decide for yourself what wealth means to you.

Many people think it’s the economy but it’s the philosophy, your financial philosophy.

Leaving a profit:

  • You leave an apartment- make sure its clean (leaving profit).
  • To touch a life and leave it better than before.
  • To touch a job and leave it better than before.
  • To touch a business and leave it better than before.

Reduce your liabilities, increase your assets.

Life is opportunity but life is also a price.

If you give more of what you have, then you have given the most.

  • Greed: hoping for more than you share, getting something at the expense of others.
  • Ambition- I only want something at the service of others, not the expense of others but at the service of others.

If you wish to be greatest, you must find a way to serve the most.

If you help enough people get what they want, you can have everything you want- that’s not greed, that’s the legitimate ambition.

Financial independence=- ability to live solely from the income of your own personal resources.

Ambition to render good service, to develop good skills in the market place, to become so valueable that you can live independently off of the income of your own personal resources.

  1. You need to learn to live on 70% of your net income- net(money leftover after paying taxes). Rest 30: 10%- charity. 10%- set aside to manage/ buy/ repair/ engage in commerce. 10%- goes to savings.
  2. Be careful with your credit cards. Credit is the easiest way to get into debt.

If you work hard on yourself, you will make millions.
If you work hard on yourself, you will make a fortune!

Put together a financial statement;

  • Enlist your liabilities and assets.
  • Calculate your net worth by subtracting the above two.

Keep excellent books to where your money goes.

.

Enrich life

Think of something you can do today to make yourself feel rich- make phone call, thank you note-flowers, read a classic, reserve tickets to concert, food u never tasted. Experiences you never had.

.

SET a goal not to miss anything- especially the things within our reach.

.

Power of communication

You need to have well-chosen words available in your bank of mental resource, along with enough emotion from your heart and soul, to make your communication work.

  1. Have something worth saying (comes from cultivating your interest, sensitivity and knowledge).
  2. Say it well (with sincerity, practice).
  3. Consider brevity. All you need is just enough. The more you know, the brief you can be. If you become personally secure and your reputation precedes you, sometimes you don’t need that many words. And if you pay attention to those you’re talking with, understand their personalities, watch their body language you may realize that you need to be brief.. or you’ll loose them in the first minute. Read your audience and read them well. To know the best way to approach them.
  4. Learn to decipher body language.
  5. Learn to pick up emotional signals- what others are feeling so you can change the way you communicate.
  6. Express with style- be a student of different stykes but develop your own style.
  7. Develop your vocabulary- the more limited the vocab the more the tendency to exhibit poor behavior.

Intensifying words

What makes language powerful- words filled with emotion.

We need the full range of emotion.

The emotion must be well measured, well balanced. You don’t overdo it when expessing a small point.

Where does intensity comes from? It comes from the blend of all the experiences.

When words are mixed with faith and inspiration, miracles can happen.

Ask Yourslef: what could I do and what experiences could I engage in that would give me a broader understanding of human sufferings as well as human joy? How can I become more sensitive to the problems in life as well as to the triumphs the sorrows as well as the joys, the failures as well as the success?

Develop networking skills

  1. Remember they must be mutually beneficial. In a good networking relationship, you will get more than you give out.
  2. Keep the relationship active. Schedule quarterly lunches. If you see a story about your contact in newspaper, clip it out and send to her with a note of congrats. Keep in regular touch, not just when u need something.
  3. Express your gratitude and appreciation. Buy expensive gifts
  4. Keep yur professional relationships professional. If it looks like jealousy is rearing, its ugly head, firmly but politely cut it off. When a relationship no longer serves you, step away from it.
  5. Remember the other persons needs for achievement.. by respecting this need, by providing guidance and leadership, by sharing some of your personal experiences with them, they’ll end up bringing opportunity to you.
  6. Remember that competition is good- healthy competition. When used positively can be used as a benchmark to measure your productivity. Competition to reach a goal is far more noble than a competition to beat out an associate. It builds character.

Strengthen your mental muscle

Engage in debates. You have got to have necessary mental muscle to be able to understand different ideologies, sort them out and state your opinions clearly.

Asking and receiving

You have got to be  good asker. Asking starts the receiving process.

I see it now, I got up everyday this year and worked hard, but no where in my house is the list of what I want from my life. There are 2 ways to ask:

  1. Ask intelligently– don’t mumble. Be clear. Be specific. Describe what you want, define it. What do I want? And what for? The purpose? Purpose is stronger than the object.
  2. Ask with faith– children are the masters here. They firmly believe that they can get what they want simply by asking.

Power of Influence

Never underestimate the power of influence- ask yourself. Whom am I around? What are these associations doing to me? What they got me doing? What have they got me listening to? What have they got me talking? Reading? Feeling?

Spend major time with major influences and minor time with minor influences.

Association on purpose- getting around the right people by expanding your circle of influence.

If you are full of good things, pour them out. As you do, more will be poured in.

Pay an honest price for an honest value. Don’t be cheap.

Increase your resilience

How would you ever handle it if you lost everything you had today? What would your next step be? How long would you be depressed and upset and angry? What would it take for you to pull yourself up and start all over again? How resilient are you? Could you handle it?

It would take a lot of self-descipline, it would take a lot of positive self talk to muster up the energy to begin again. It would take a lot of concentration to block out the noise and clutter of all the negative voices of others around you. It would take a lot of self-reliance to avoid the entanglements and blame. It would take a lot of faith and trust in God to move ahead. Personal loss- you must be patient with yourself and give yourself time to grieve, mourn and regroup.

A resilient person wont give up. A resilient person will inspite of all obstackes and set backs, keep doing it until everything is back on track.

7 characteristics of resilience

  1. Resilience requires insight- need to develop the ability to ask yourself tough questions and be honest with your answers
  2. Resilience is independent, its also tied to others- the more people u are responsible for, the greater your motivation to begin again. And then u gotta count on yourself as well to bounce back into life.
  3. Resilience calls for initiative- you need to develop the ability to take charge of the situation or problem, you need to stand up and do whatever is necessary to recover.
  4. Resilience has an element of creativity- with resilience, be able to look at a situation and creatively determine the best way out.
  5. Resilient person has humor- you have got to take your goals seriously but then got to be able to laugh at yourslef or your situation at times.
  6. A resilient person has the strongest sense of morality.- whatever u do to get bounce back into life, make sure its moral success, if its yours to keep, must be at the service of others

Developing your own model

Define success for yourself. To answer this , You will need a combination of philosophies and ideologies, mental food and exercises, listen to various speakers, read various books, variety of perspectives.

Gather up all the knowledge- debate it. Put it all on the table and look at it, dissect it, turn it around and stare at it. Ask questions. Make statements.

Key formula for success- a few disciplines practiced everyday.

You have got to be a dreamer.
You have got to envision the future.
You have got to see the finish line while you are running the race.
You have got to hear the cheers while you are in the middle of a monster project
And You have got to be willing to put yourself through the paces of doing the uncomfortable until it becomes comfortable. Because that how u realize your dream.
