It felt as though an invisible hand guided me towards them. With each step, anticipation mounted, and soon I found myself drawn to a simple woman, her shawl billowing gently in the cooling breeze.
Taking a seat beside her, I became enraptured by the scene unfolding before me. The woman seemed unaware of my presence, or perhaps she simply welcomed my silent company. Around us, a small gathering had formed, eyes glued to the storyteller who stood at the center, ready to weave a tale that promised to transport us all.
As the first words spilled from the speaker’s lips, a wave of anticipation washed over the crowd. The tale they were about to share was no ordinary story—it delved deep into the mysteries of ancient Sumerians, a civilization shrouded in myth and legend. With bated breath, we awaited the beginning of a journey that would take us to the very heart of history itself.

“It was the Anunnaki Gods those who from heaven to earth came”- who resided on a planet at the end of the solar system named “Nebiru”- a planet which rises close to earth’s orbit every 3600 years.
They were considered the children of the sky god Anu- the supreme deity. Amongst them was Enlil: A deity powerful and authoritative, associated with the air, wind, and storms. Enki (Ea): A deity- wise and benevolent who possessed knowledge of the arts and sciences. Inanna: a powerful and assertive goddess, capable of both great passion and great violence. Ninhursag: a nurturing and protective goddess.
.
Yet, even the gods were not immune to the ravages of time and fate. As the climate of their distant planet, Nebiru, teetered on the brink of collapse, the Anunnaki turned to advanced technologies in a desperate bid for survival. Despite their mastery, the scarcity of gold, vital for shielding against cosmic radiation, left them vulnerable. It was then that one among them, possessed of great foresight, proposed a daring plan: to seek refuge on a neighboring planet—Earth.
Thus, amidst the icy grip of the last Ice Age, the Anunnaki descended upon the fertile plains of Mesopotamia, bringing with them the legacy of their celestial home. it was around 10,000 BC, an era when mammoths and Siberian tigers roamed freely the land.
In their quest for dominion, they brought forth slaves from a distant realm, the Igigi, to toil beneath their yoke. These slaves, weary of oppression, rose in rebellion, sparking a conflict that would shape the destiny of humanity.
In the crucible of this upheaval, the Anunnaki sought a new creation, one forged from the melding of Igigi genes and the primordial essence of Earth’s own inhabitants. From this alchemy emerged Adamu, the progenitor of a race sculpted to the Anunnaki’s desires. Under their tutelage, humanity flourished, mastering the arts of science, writing, and architecture, erecting monuments that stood as testaments to their divine benefactors.

Yet, as the eons passed, the celestial dance of the cosmos heralded the return of Nebiru, its gravitational embrace casting Earth into turmoil. The Great Flood, swept across the land, cleansing the world of its sins.
Some say, only one man named Ziusudra was spared. Enki, in his compassion, instructed Ziusudra to construct an ark and save pairs of every creature.
.
Following the flood, the gods, seeking to rein in human excesses, introduced death and disease into the world, thus restoring order and imposing limits on human life and ambition.
The Anunnaki themselves returned to Nebiru leaving mankind or what was left of the living beings on earth to deal with the aftermath themselves.
With the remnants of divine knowledge bestowed upon them by the Anunnaki, they set about rebuilding civilization, armed with a formidable array of gifts and skills.
The secrets of technology, once the province of celestial beings, now lay at the fingertips of mortal hands. The craft of the carpenter, the artistry of the coppersmith, the meticulous scrolls of the scribe—all flourished under the guidance of human ingenuity.
With the gods’ teachings came not just knowledge and skill, but also the shadows of their own flaws: power, deceit, and the propensity for greed. As humanity rose from the ruins, they did so as masters of their own destiny, no longer subservient but wielding authority over their own kind. Yet, in their pursuit of progress, they succumbed to the same temptations that had plagued their divine predecessors. Enslaving those beyond their borders, they exploited captured labor to fuel their own ambitions, echoing the actions of the Anunnaki before them. Thus, the cycle of domination and exploitation continued, woven into the fabric of a civilization shaped by both the light and darkness of their inherited legacy.
In the heart of their cities, clay tablets bore witness to the wisdom of the ages, inscribed with the secrets of creation and the echoes of a distant paradise lost to time. Among these tablets, symbols danced across the surface, two in particular standing out against the backdrop of history: the eight-pointed star and the majestic pyramid, symbols of their cosmic understanding and earthly ambition.
In their contemplation of the cosmos, the Sumerians envisioned a ten-planet solar system, with Saturn’s mysterious rings capturing their imagination. To observe Saturn’s north pole was to glimpse celestial wonder, a feat that spoke of humanity’s boundless curiosity and the eternal quest for knowledge.
Beneath the celestial canopy, the Sumerians gazed upward, their minds filled with wonder at the mysteries of the universe. They believed the earth to be a circular landmass, cradled within the embrace of boundless waters, with another ocean spanning the heavens above.
Their understanding of the elements was as profound as it was practical. They divided water into two categories: the sweet waters of rain and rivers, and the bitter expanse of the sea. With clay as their medium, they crafted tablets to record their knowledge.
Sumerian poets crafted tales of divine origins, recounting the creation of the world, a primordial paradise, and the cataclysmic deluge that reshaped existence. Among their writings, intriguing theological musings emerged, such as the notion of a lamb as a sacrificial substitute for humanity, symbolizing redemption through sacrifice.
Evidence of Sumerian music adorned their clay tablets, documenting compositions and instructions on how to play instruments and tune them. By 2700 B.C., Sumeria boasted magnificent libraries, such as the one discovered at Tello, where archaeologist De Sarzac unearthed a staggering collection of over 30,000 tablets. These repositories of knowledge stood as testaments to the intellectual and cultural achievements of this ancient civilization.
Yet, despite the challenges of their environment, the Sumerians flourished. They were the architects of progress, inventing the plough, the wagon wheel, and the secrets of cast metals. Mathematics flowed through their veins, as they mastered multiplication and division, and devised the first multiplication tables.
Time itself bowed to their command, as they divided the year into lunar months and the day into minutes and seconds. Their number system, based on the divine cycles of twelve and sixty, resonated with the rhythms of the cosmos, guiding their every endeavor.
But it was not only in the realm of the mind that the Sumerians excelled. They shaped the very landscape aroundthem, digging vast networks of irrigation to nourish their fields and building dams to tame the mighty rivers.
In the heart of their cities, temples rose like beacons of hope, presided over by priest-kings known as the Ensi. These sacred structures, adorned with intricate carvings and towering ziggurats, served as a testament to their faith and a focal point for their communities.
In the bustling cities of ancient Sumeria, contracts were solemnly written and witnessed, while a complex credit system facilitated economic exchanges. Women played a vital role, with 15,000 employed in architecture in Girsu alone. Factories churned out vast quantities of flour and bread, sustaining the populace. They understood the value of cooperation and organization, appointing foremen and overseers to ensure the smooth running of their enterprises.
Despite this thriving economy, currency was absent, and workers were compensated with goods and food.
As the stars glittered overhead, casting their ancient light upon the earth, the Sumerians looked to the heavens with awe and reverence. For in their quest for knowledge and understanding, they had unlocked the secrets of the universe, leaving behind a legacy that would endure for millennia to come.
.
It was the first civilization they say – The Sumerians – In the golden glow of Mesopotamian dawn, amidst the fertile crescent where the Tigris and Euphrates rivers embrace. It’s a realm veiled in mystery, where whispers of gods and the clangor of clay tablets echo through the ages.
For in the end, as I returned to the present, I understood that while faces may change and voices may fade, the essence of the story remains unchanged. It is a tale as old as time itself, ever evolving yet timeless in its essence. And as the storytellers come and go, so too do the listeners, each adding their own chapter to the ongoing saga of human existence.
And hence the story of us humans is ancient
As civilizations, that are long forgotten
We too shall one day, be forgotten!
