Poetic Inspirations Turkish Poets

Yunus Emre

.
Yunus Emre, an illustrious Turkish poet and mystic of the 13th century, remains a timeless figure whose verses echo the essence of love, spirituality, and human connection. Born in Anatolia, his poetry transcends boundaries, captivating hearts across cultures and generations. Yunus Emre’s profound insights into the human condition, coupled with his emphasis on universal love and tolerance, have made his works not just a treasure of Turkish literature but a beacon of wisdom for humanity.

These poems have been translated by Kabir Helminski & Refik Algan & a few others, featured in pdf, which can accessed here.

A documentary drama has been made by Turkish cinema on the life of Dervesh Yunus, Which is an epic watch!

Here are some Quotes I made notes of while watching the series:

  • “Mentioning that you are not complaining, is a complain in itself.”
  • “Our nature is blended with love, not suspicion.”
  • “If you accumulate things that you cannot own, they start to own you.”
  • “whatever you seek, will find you, yunus effendi!”

You enter this journey with your mind and then leave it. and continue with the heart. from now on your whole work is of heart. The work you do is of heart. The food you eat, the word you speak, the step you take, the breath you breathe, all from the heart. From now on your companion is your heart, my Yunus.

Donot let the devil deceive you from Allah. the devil calls for someone with what they desire the most. He sets a honey trap. Gives the poison in golden cup. whether you are in a lodge or in Mecca, the devil will not rest, this is his duty. just because the devil is doing his duty, will the person refrain from his duty? As you stand strong, he will attack from another point. You will fend off that attack, he will open another front. He will put honey traps in your way, come-on My Yunus, sail through the seas, cross the seas and come. In a battlefield, soldiers die and wars end. But the war between a person and his desires never end. Not until his last breadth.

Donot miss the sages who say: this road is thinner than a strand of hair and sharper than a sword. it burns in fire, drowns in water- sheikh tapduk Emre

Zakat is to be paid on everything. Bodily zakat is the fasting phase, mind’s zakat is enlightenment. parlance’s zakat is allusion(zikr). Hearts zakat is love. Our pay belongs to Allah.

Picking up a stone from road and saving an old man from tripping is charity. On a summer day, giving a cup of water to an animal is sadaqah. every good act is a sadaqa. where there is no zakat and charity, there is no order, no unity.

IF you have little give little. if you have more give more.

if we share, we get full. if we get divided we perish.

Shaytan is a two-faced deceiver. He shapes himself into the truth. He imitates what is true and truth. May Allah have mercy on those who cannot tell the difference. They see the devil and say they saw Gabriel. Beware my Yunus, do not fall to the lies of shaytan.

The heart is the soul my yunus. the body is animal. The two are in constant war unknown to us. Those who do not clean their hearts are animals.

Ilham is in beauty. Those who have ilham make out Ibrat from this world and those who donot have Ilham make an example out of themselves for this world.

From now on your realm is rooh and your beahavious is Love.

Desire doesn’t die yunus, it sleeps. Beware! do not be deceived by the devil who pretends to be sleeping. Beware. Be awake.

.

My your pen be truth and your ink be love. Always write love with love, from love. Donot waste time with empty words.

“You are still raw yunus, you smell of the world.”

The one who knows doesn’t say, the one who says , doesn’t know.

Sheikh said my daughter is deaf, blind and crippled. Blind because she doesn’t look at evil. Deaf because she doesn’t hear sins. Crippled because she doesn’t walk on the unrighteous road.

Emre means love. in farsi it is Emrah, in aramaic it is amur, in latin it is amore, in turkish it is emre.

That was the night Ashiq Yunus was born. Qazi Yunus became Yunus Emre.

.

My love for you goes deeper than my soul,

My path amounts to this: I don’t say I’m inside myself.

Anywhere i look, its filled with you.

Where can i put you, if you are already inside?

Don’t ask me about myself, i am already inside.

The I within me is deeper than myself.

I can’t lay a hand on the one who took me from myself

You cant go over the head of the Sultan.

Some people get their share of Revelations,

and some aim to go deeper than this.

In the beautiful light of his face,

is a fire brighter than the light of the day.

Yunus chanced to meet a friend.

Who showed him a door inside,

after many months and years,

he went silently to his old doorstep.

Yunus effendi came back.

Just as on the night he left.

The moon and the stars were only witness.

We need God himself, we donot need the world.

We need meaning, we donot need action.

This is laylatul qadr for us, let the morning never come.

We donot need daylight, O! saki give us love.

we donot need springs in heaven, lets drink glass after glass.

we never get drunk, we donot need hazards

If I fall sick with this trouble, do not give me peace

I donot need a cure., I donot need, my love.

I donot need, my friend, I donot need.

We need God, himself, we donot need the world.

Yunus got drunk and tumbled down

He called for tapduk, he doesn’t need shame.

Prophet(ﷺ) said: “The voice of a child and rain reminds us of God.”

What was our aim when we took the road? Who we are? What are we doing? Where are we coming from and Where are we going? Where are we now? Where is this place? Our aim was to know those secrets, with the meditation of prophet(ﷺ), with the help of the sages, we overcame the hardships and know ourselves. When we know ourselves, we find God.

.

What belongs to you? nothing, because you donot exist. God is here, you are not.

.

The one who gets drunk with alcohol becomes sober with the frost.

The one who gets drunk with love, becomes sober with travel.

Get ready, we are taking the road.

who takes the road, thinks to arrive, not to go back

that is fine if we can arrive.

if we cannot come back, consider that we did.

End of the way is the beginning

if it was not so, the way should be two, not one.

it would be three, not two.

but we are the people of the union.

there is only one way.

.

We met on a road and we became friends yunus, neither road ends nor the friendship. Both the road and passenger need a friend. well what do they say:

oonja rafique soonra tareeq (first partner than the road).

The partner is the same. He introduces the passenger to the road. If it were not so, would Moosa that you called God together with him at the tur mountain be a partner for khizr?

.

Why did God created us, Ya shaikh? “I created the jin and human that only will know me and serve me, Allah says in surah. To serve means to adore. The duty of a person who serves is to adore.

Whom? To master.

Who is the master, Effendi?

If there is a servant, then there is also a Sultan.

what is the meaning of adoring? It is to know.

Is it possible to adore without adoring?

We adored God, we knew God.

for what? Because we are the servants of God. Then he created us to know him.

Is it not written in hadith-e-Qudsi: I was a hidden treasure. Loved to be known. that is why I created humans.

In which way can one know this? The point is to know how can one know this. To see the artisan in the work. If the artisan didn’t want to be known, who would perform this? Who is the person who knows this? Human, Inasn! He addresses him to Himself.

The respondent of the truth is Human.

Thank you sooooo much for all these translations! God bless you! I am trying to translate the series in Romanian, and not all poems were translated in English (I don’t speak Turkish). I hope I can find the missing parts in your post.
